Route Notes…..

This is a tough but rewarding route with a focus on avoiding the busier roads and towns, steering more towards the scenery and the history that County Down has to offer.

Starting in Maghera (car park available), the route is fairly flat for the first 100k, taking in some Ancient sites (Slidderyford Dolmen, Dundrum Castle, Struell Wells, Ballynoe, Annadorn Dolmen) and coastal villages (Ardglass, Strangford).

The next 70k is undulating as it takes you west through small villages and the coastal towns of Warrenpoint and Rostrevor before the main climbing of the day and then a final decent back to the start.

There are quite a few options for different starting points if Maghera doesn’t suit (eg Warrenpoint, Loughinisland (Brennan’s petrol station), Strangford).

The usual proof of passage is required, Photo at Controls, and GPS Track. Controls are:

Dundrum Castle

Strangford

Struell Wells

Burren Dolmen

Warrenpoint

Shops available at Dundrum, Killough, Ardglass, Strangford, Loughinisland, Leitrim, Warrenpoint and Rostrevor.
