Route Description:

Embark on this Sandymount to Drogheda Audax Route

Start Your Journey: Sandymount Green

Begin your Audax adventure at Sandymount Green, a charming village square that’s the beating heart of Sandymount. Surrounded by cafes and shops, it’s the perfect place to fuel up before your ride.

Coastal Beauty: Howth

Your next stop is Howth, a beautiful peninsula that offers breathtaking views of Dublin Bay. Here you will find Howth Castle and its gardens, a place steeped in history with ties to the legendary pirate queen, Grace O’Malley. This is only section of the route where the climbs are challenging; after Howth the remaining climbs are moderate.

Malahide: A Touch of Elegance

Ride on to Malahide, known for its marina, beach, and the historic Malahide Castle. The castle grounds have over 260 acres of lush parkland and botanical gardens.

Through Time: Duleek In Duleek, you’ll find remnants of an early Christian monastic settlement. The Duleek Heritage Park includes the 12th-century High Cross and the ruins of the 15th-century Abbey of St Mary.

Drogheda: Gateway to History

As you reach Drogheda, immerse yourself in its rich history. Marvel at the town’s medieval walls at the Millmount Museum for panoramic views and a deep dive into local heritage.

Seaside Escape: Bettystown

Cycle towards Bettystown & Laytown, coastal villages with sandy beaches that’s perfect for a leisurely break. Enjoy the sea breeze and the sound of waves before continuing your journey.

Balbriggan: Harbor Views

Next, head to Balbriggan, a seaside town with a working harbor and lighthouse. Take a moment to appreciate the coastal scenery and the town’s historical buildings.

Skerries: Picturesque Harbour

Arrive in Skerries, a town known for its picturesque harbour and traditional Irish pubs. The Skerries Mills offer a unique experience of Ireland’s industrial heritage.

Rush: Hidden Gem

Your route also takes you through Rush, a quaint town with a rich horticultural history and beautiful beaches. It’s a great spot to enjoy the tranquillity of rural Ireland.

Return to Sandymount

Conclude your Audax route back at Sandymount Green via Malahide and Portmarnock, where you can celebrate the completion of your journey with a well-deserved meal at one of the local eateries.

This route offers a blend of coastal views, historical sites, and charming towns, making it a memorable experience for any beginner or experienced long-distance cyclist.
