Red Line Red Lane 600

Date: Saturday 26th July 2014

At 600 kilometres the Red Line, Red Lane is was the longest event in Audax Ireland calendar. The route is similar to previous years and uses Bray Wheelers Clubhouse as HQ. You leave at 6.00am over a series of climbs up to Glencullen, descending to Brittas and rising and dipping again into Kilteel at around 40 km. After this taxing start, the track levels out through the Midlands, winding through Kildare, Laois and into the Slieve Bloom mountains in Offaly. This portion through the mountains starts with a sustained but gentle gradient. You return through Kilkenny, Carlow and Wicklow to Bray Wheelers Clubhouse and the manned control. Here you can expect an evening meal as well as breakfast. The Bray ‘Control’ opens at around 19:00 on Saturday evening and remains open until around 10:00 am on Sunday morning. As well as food, this allows some time for sleep so you may like to bring a sleeping bag, mattress and toiletries as showers are available.

The final day’s 180km is through Wicklow and North Wexford on the countryside’s finest lanes. This portion of the ride is quite demanding. Though there are only a few sharp climbs, the track undulates considerably and is demanding on tired legs. Return to event HQ by way of Aughrim and eventually the coast road.

Make no mistake, this 600 is a challenging test of machine, man, mettle and much more besides. It’s completion is sure to be a season highlight. The route is relatively easy to navigate on a generally good road surface. There are some long drags, some rolly bits, a few sharp climbs but nothing overly taxing. There will be night riding for everyone so good lights will be needed and perhaps additional warm, or even weather-resistant clothes. Food stops are sparse on the first evening/night so some on-the-spot planning will be needed. Riders will need to stock up with food at the onset of darkness. An average to slow-paced rider may not see an open shop between Callan (250 km) and Bray (420 km). GPS files and route sheet available.

While we want to accommodate all, we are asking people to enter early as some preparation is needed for the manned control.
