Route

From Slane, the route will take you through lumpy backroads of Meath into Louth with views in the distance of the Irish Sea and the Cooley Mountains. Then over the border to the first control at Crossmaglen, Co. Armagh.

You then will weave through Monaghan, a corner of Fermanagh, and Cavan, over the first pass through the Iron Mountains. The descent takes you to the second control at Dowra, the first village on the river Shannon, straddling counties Leitrim and Cavan.

Shortly afterwards begins the long steady climb to Bencroy at over 400m where you can sit at the Ultachs memorial and ponder the panoramic views and local history before the long descent towards Ballinamore at the 200km mark.

The final 100km rolls over drumlins, taking in Killashandra, Oldcastle and Kells on the way home.

There is a mixture of R-roads and local roads, the surfaces vary as you would expect on such roads. The route is not easy, but it is certainly not hard by Audax standards and there is plenty of scenery to distract you along the way.
