Route Description:

Controls as follows: Tuam 68km, Marie Lukes Bar 126.5km, Spiddal 214.5km, Oranmore 250km, Portumna 308km and Belmont 350km.

This route follows relatively quiet roads north westerly from Athlone over to Tuam and continues in the same direction passing between Lough Mask and Lough Carra into Partry in Co.Mayo, where it turns southerly to do an anticlockwise loop of Lough Mask and its stunning scenery. The route brings you into Clonbur and on to Maam skirting the beautiful Lough Corrib, before heading back in a southerly direction to Maam Cross and Costelloe along the coast into Spiddal. Here a left turn takes you along quiet back roads into Galway City, where you take the southern quays and pedal out into the village of Oranmore. From here it’s a straight run to Loughrea, where you branch off to Abbey and into Portumna.

From here you take a northerly route passing through the Co. Offaly towns of Banagher, Shannon Harbour and the final control in Belmont. Next up is Shannonbridge where a quick pint can be had if you’re early enough, before you head into Ballinasloe, which has a loop after it and then a straight run back to Athlone.

A relatively flat a 400km cycle, 2400m in total climbing, the stunning views on offer make this a 400km cycle not to be missed.

Numerous re-fuelling opportunities at shops along the route, particularly in Tuam (68km), Ballinrobe (99km), Tourmakeady (120km), Clonbur (148km), Maam (167km), Costelloe (195km), Spiddal (214km), Galway (240km), Oranmore (250km), Loughrea (277km), Portumna (308km), Banagher (339km), Shannonbridge (361km) and Ballinasloe (374km).
