Route Description

This route explores the fringes and hinterlands of Co. Tyrone. It starts in the village of Moy (known locally as The Moy) and criss-crosses the River Blackwater into Co. Armagh several times before heading to Cookstown, where you will cycle on the longest street in Ireland.

The next section takes you into the Sperrins, via Beaghmore Stone Circles and Davagh Forest, and pops briefly over the Co. Derry border into Draperstown. Glenelly Valley cuts through the Sperrin AONB for 20km before the route crosses Barnes Gap and descends to the village of Gortin (rhymes with scorchin’). Then its back up to Gortin Glen Lakes & Forest Park, from where you can freewheel down to Omagh town!

There now follows some respite from the climbing, until you reach Clogher that is, after which the route will loop around Slieve / Sliabh Beagh (rhymes with leg), slipping into Co. Fermanagh and then Co. Monaghan, where you will reach the high point of the route at Bragan Mountain.

The climbing now over, you return to the Blackwater River which leads you back to Moy. Along this stretch you will pass the Castle Leslie Estate (home of Sir Jack Leslie, the disco-dancing aristocrat), and ride through the conservation village of Caledon.

Expect about 3700m of climbing and mixed road surfaces throughout this route, including a few sections of gravel (along the Coalisland Canal @17-23Km and at St Patrick’s Chair & Well @244-245km). There are some fairly remote sections without opportunity for food and water, but you will find options available at Cookstown (61km), Draperstown (110km), Gortin (148km), Omagh (167km), Clougher (193km), Aughnacloy (258km), Caledon (281km) and Moy (301km). Tomney’s Bar in Moy is well worth a visit at the finish.
