Route Description: The aim of an Audax ride is to prove your self-sufficiency as a rider. Audax routes have a set distance to be completed within a set time on a mandatory route. An Audax route is created to test your ability to navigate unfamiliar roads and terrain, to be able to find your own food and drink, to get round with the allotted time without the need for a support vehicle or marshal. This requires you to understand and observe traffic rules, wear suitable clothing and bring or find supplies to sustain you and fix any mechanical issues that arise. At the end you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you achieved everything you set out to do.
The Introduction to Audax 100 is a shorter version of a longer Audax ride. It still has a set route that must be followed within seven hours and there are two control points that must be visited on the course.
This route has been picked to give riders an introduction to the discipline of Audax. There is a mandatory route (https://ridewithgps.com/routes/45783660) that starts and finishes at the Papal Cross car park in the Phoenix Park. There are mix of busy R roads and smaller local roads. The first and last 15km are on busy suburban roads. Some roads are unsigned and small with few passing places. The route crosses a number of busy R roads, exercise caution at junctions. There are two control points, Kilmessan Centra and J. O’Connell’s pub Skryne. Toilets and water are available at the Phoenix Park Visitor Centre approximately 400m from start across the main road. There are also portaloos in the Papal Cross car park.
There are few shops on the route once you leave Dublin, there is a small shop in Kilclone at 28.9km, it may not be open on the day. The Centra in Kilmessan at 49km is probably the biggest shop. There are plenty of shops/garages from Ratoath at 78km to the finish.
Sign on will be from 08:30 and the finishing time is 16:00. I will be there at the start and finish.
Navigation: This route is not marshalled, you will need a copy of the route on a GPS device and be able to follow turn by turn instructions. If you wish to have a printed route sheet please let me know before the 28th February.
Food/Water/Mechanical – no support is provided. You are expected to bring enough supplies to get you around the course or to pay for them en route. Your bicycle should be in good working order.
Parking – there is plenty of free parking in the Phoenix Park. The Papal Cross car park should be open.
Validation – there will be paper brevet cards available. You will need a receipt from a shop at Kilmessan with the time on it and be able to answer an information question at the second control points. Bring a pen to complete the brevet card.
