The route starts at Youghal’s historic 18th Century Clock Gate tower and heads out for a lap of the Blackwater river. After a flat roll-out from Youghal and into Co. Waterford, a short climb towards Clashmore sets the tone for the rest of the route because, although the route is shaped by the Blackwater, it still has approximately 2000m of climbing. The road takes riders Northwards on the Eastern side of the river, through Aglish and Villierstown and the near 200 year old Hindu-Gothic Dromana Gate. On reaching Cappoquin, the route turns West and follows the Blackwater up to Lismore where, in view of Lismore Castle, the road starts heading away from the river for a while and starts upwards towards Araglin. After Araglin, the route passes through Kilworth, Glanworth (over the 16/17th century bridge) and into Doneraile. The tea rooms in the former servants quarters of Doneraile Court are well worth a stop (just remember they are about 300m “off course” so make the necessary route adjustments!).
After Doneraile, the route continues West before reaching Ballyclough and swinging around for the run Eastwards to the sea, staying on the South bank of the Blackwater, passing through Mallow, Killavullen and Fermoy and keeping close to the river on its run to Lismore. Lismore is the last town on the route and the last possible source of refreshments before the 30km leg back to Youghal passing Tourin House & Gardens and long drag over Knockanore.
The finish is at the tourist office in Youghal, which is just about 80m from the start location.
Car parking is available at the back of the tourist office
